I just watched the movie about those singing and dancing penguins, Happy Feet. I would have never thought all the character’s voices consists of Robin Williams, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Brittany Murphy and, of course, Elijah Wood for the voice of Mumble, the main penguin character. That is one amazing group of people. It’s about a colony of penguins that sings to mate. They get their partner by singing and when the female penguin likes what she hears, then the male penguin is her partner of choice. Get it?…huhu..
Anyway, this story revolves around one particular penguin named Mumble. When he was just an egg, his dad,
Memphis (voiced by Hugh Jackman), who was in charge of taking care of the egg when his wife, Norma Jean (voiced by Nicole Kidman) when out to the ocean in search for food. By the way, they do all this in colony of course. Anyway, one stormy night, all the male penguins were huddling with each other to keep the eggs warm.
Memphis accidentally dropped the egg and that in the penguin world, is bad. The next day, all the eggs hatch. All except one.
Memphis was freakin out thought the drop had an affect on it. Eventually, the egg did hatch but something odd happen. It likes to move it’s feet. All the other penguins were like, “what’s it doing?”..
memphis just hopes it just a phase. So, mama Jean comes back and finds her beautiful baby penguin and couldn’t care less what others think of it.
Ok, like usual, all new-born penguins have to go to school (DUH!!) and learn how to find their Heart Song. Cos without it, you ain’t penguin, man. So, all the baby penguins take turn to sing and it was then Mumble’s turn and what do you know, he can’t sing!!!!!!!! Not one single tune!!!! His parents took him to a singing coach and still he can’t sing. So poor mumble grew up, isolated from the other penguins. But he did have one special thing goin’ on for him. He can tap dance. Pretty good at it too. Fast forwarding to graduation day, all the teenage penguins are allowed to go into the ocean and catch fish, party, do a lot of singing while Mumble was all alone. The next day he woke up to a giant seal trying to eat it and met with the Amigos from the happy feet colony. Now these penguins, dance to mate. Weird world huh? Ok, the amigos it led by Ramon, voiced by Robin Williams. Let me tell u guys, the Amigos are my fav bunch of penguins. Leave it to Robin Williams to put in the humour. Hilarious man!!!
Well, when Mumble went back with the Amigos, the leader of the Heart Song colony accused the Happy Feet colony of the cause of fish receding in the ocean. The truth is, the Aliens (Human actually…us la!!) are the ones taking all the fish. Mumble tried to tell them but they won’t believe him. It’s more like, “I’ll believe it, when I see it”.. =P So Mumble and the Amigos go on the journey to find these aliens when it got dangerous and it was up to Mumble to finish the job. He got swept to human shore and they had him captivated in a zoo or something. You know, like our Underwater world. He tried to communicate but to no avail. He even almost lost his mind. One day, a little girl went and knocked a rhythm on the glass wall and Mumble tap danced to it. The whole world was watching him.
Suddenly, Mumble was back in the colony and he told everyone to tap dance when the Aliens come cos they like it. The Aliens even have a tracking device stuck to Mumble. There were a huge arguments between the younger generation and the older generation of how bad the idea was. Then the humans, oopss…sorry…the Aliens came, and they danced, the old generations realized that the Aliens really do like it. at that very moment, all around the world realized that they are not the only ones eating fish… huhu…corny line, isn’t it? anyway, debates arisen on how to prevent these creature from starvation. So, basically, it’s really about saving the animal. But I think it’s more than that. I think this story portrays a lot of good values. Love. Hope. Trust. Believing in urself.
I cried watching this movie. It’s a comedy cartoon movie and I cried!! Wanna know why? Because when I was watching Mumble in captivation and how he was feeling when he was in there, I imagined all those penguins in the Underwater World Langkawi. I was so excited to go and watch them in captivation the last time I was there and feeling disappointed that they didn’t even move a muscle and that they were boring, that it never occurred to me that they could be feeling just how Mumble felt. Clueless of what was happening. They might be thinking of their families back home. I know this sounds utterly insane but it could be true. I say those penguins should be put back in their habitat and be left alone. We should help them develop in their own habitat not by keeping them in captivation. It’s just not right.
